About the Author
photo Tony Furr is a practising Structural and Civil Engineer with almost 20 years of experience, including five years as the Director of his own consulting practice located in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

The programming behind Structural Toolkit has its origins in the early 1990's as the result of an interest in computers (developed around the age of 10) and a difficulty in producing consistant answers with a calculator.

Tony needed a method of completing his daily engineering calculations that eliminated computation errors, increased calculation speed and prompted the correct use of Standards and formulas. As his 'toolkit' became more sophisticated, interest from collegues made Tony realise that other engineers had similar problems. Not all had the time and/or interest to develop a computer based aid, so in 2002 Structural Toolkit was born.

Tony maintains a keen interest in the analysis and design of Steel framed industrial structures from an influential period, early in his career. His programming interest has now extended to second order analysis methods.

Married with two children, Tony knows the less time it takes to complete necessary work means more time for family and friends...well that's the theory.

I can verify the time savings

"I can verify the time savings in using Structural Toolkit through the work that I did in Brisbane. An average concrete beam would have taken me up to 40 minutes to design by hand, maybe only 20 minutes using my own design spreadsheets (with a certain lack of reliability and accuracy with my own spreadsheets which are not very sophisticated). Using Structural Toolkit, I found that I could complete a beam design within about 5-10 minutes easily.

We did a lot of multi-storey residential slab designs that I modelled and analysed using Slabs (Inducta) software. I used Structural Toolkit alongside Slabs to design the slabs and beams, with the greatest efficiency being in quick checks against alanysis and easy modification of beams sizes / details"
